Below is a guest post from our interim President Deb Bushway. It is a message from Deb to Capella faculty and staff following Capella’s commencement in Minneapolis last week. Thanks to Deb for letting us publish this wonderfully written post that captures the excitement and joy that comes with watching adult learners complete their journey at a Capella commencement.
A week ago Saturday, nearly 700 Capella University learners crossed the stage at the Minneapolis Convention Center to accept conferral of their earned degrees. These graduates had traveled from 47 states and 7 countries with family and friends to participate in this significant rite of passage. Many more (approximately 3000) were unable to travel to participate in person and celebrated this milestone at home. Many thanks to the Commencement Leadership Team and the many volunteers who flawlessly executed two commencement ceremonies and a memorable celebration dinner that weekend.
Reaching commencement is the goal of each of our entering learners, and this goal is at the center of every interaction that each of us has with our learners. Every employee at Capella has played an important role in these learners’ path to this achievement. Thank you – on behalf of our graduates and our current learners.
For those of us lucky enough to participate in the ceremonies, the images of achievement, courage, determination and well deserved pride will serve as vivid reminders of the core purpose of our day-to-day work for months to come.
While we celebrate the success of these graduates, let’s re-commit, as a community, to increase the likelihood of each learner’s success from entry through to graduation. When we at Capella set our collective mind and will to a task, great things can be accomplished. I am confident that we will continue to improve our learner success rates, enabling more of our learners to activate their purpose through education.
Congratulations to our learners and to our community for this collective success. Here’s to many more!
