Community and Connections at the YMCA General Assembly

by Leigh Johnson

Leigh and Aaron

Earlier this month I had the opportunity to connect with faculty, learners, and alliance partners by attending the YMCA General Assembly in Philadelphia, PA. The General Assembly serves as an opportunity for those from YMCA branches across the country to come together, connect with their colleagues, and take part in some excellent educational and training opportunities! This event happens every three years and it almost feels like a family reunion where people get to see old friends and meet new ones.

I was lucky enough to be able to attend this conference for the first time this year and take part in this amazing event. My favorite part (among many highlights) was getting to meet some of our very own Capella faculty and learners!

I was very excited to meet Aaron, a learner in our PhD in Human Services program specializing in Nonprofit Management and Leadership who is progressing through the program with a number of other YMCA leaders across the country as part of a cohort. Aaron and his fellow learners are getting ready to attend their third residential colloquium this September which means they are almost through with the coursework phase and approaching the comprehensive and dissertation phase of the program, a very exciting milestone! When Aaron isn’t working on his PhD he has a busy schedule as a husband, a father of four, and as the Executive Director of the Green County Family YMCA in Monroe, Wisconsin.

One of the faculty members who also came over to see us at the Capella booth is Dr. Monique Ring who teaches in our School of Business and Technology program and also works as a consultant with many YMCAs across the country. Monique has been teaching for Capella for 4 years and is also a big supporter of both Capella and the Y! I am so energized when I get to meet our dedicated faculty and our committed learners who are working to make a difference in their communities; they are truly an inspiration and part of what makes being part of Capella so amazing!
