Post-Grad Field Experience

Post-Grad Field Experience

Some states require supervised clinical experience after the required degree is earned, in order to earn a professional license. This differs by license. For example, typically licenses issued by a state Department of Education (i.e. School Counselor or School Psychologist) do not require this post-graduate experience.

It is each learner's responsibility to secure a post-graduate field experience placement. Generally, a learner will begin seeking appropriate supervisors during their time as a student. Supervisors can be found through informational interviews, networking, and professional associations. Don't underestimate the importance of this step in the process. Usually these are unpaid experiences, or minimally paid. Remember that the requirements may make is impossible to work another full-time job.

These always occur after graduation. Most mental health degrees will also have field-work experience as part of the program. In some states, part of these hours may count towards post-graduate field experience. Read your state's rules/requirements carefully.

Capella University cannot guarantee licensure, certification, or endorsement. State regulations vary regarding professional licensure and salary benefits. It is learners' responsibility to understand and comply with requirements for their state.
