About Colloquium

Residency is a required component of certain master’s and post-master’s specializations as well as the doctoral program.  The residential experience brings faculty, learners, and staff together in a collegial, stimulating, and motivating atmosphere in which application of learning from the courseroom and socialization into the specializations or disciplines is optimized. At colloquium, you’ll meet other learners, faculty from the four Schools, and Capella staff who will provide guidance that ensures a dynamic learning experience that is personally meaningful to each learner at each milestone across your program.

Why Colloquium

Earning an advanced degree or certificate reflects your commitment to acquire  knowledge and skills to advance within your professional discipline or specialization. The residency requirement is designed to provide real time learning and experience that cannot be provided in the online course environment. As you progress through coursework, at specific points in the course completion process, residency experiences will promote identification with your specialization and role as a Practitioner Scholar (master’s degree) or Scholar Practitioner (doctoral degree) in ways that are inspiring, thought-provoking, and energizing. In addition, residency academic experiences prepare you for each next stage in your program including sustained progress in coursework and preparation for the culminating final requirements of your program. For the master’s degree learner this capstone requirement is the integrative project, and for the doctoral learner, the comprehensive examination and dissertation follow completion of the residency requirement.

Who should attend

Learners enrolled in the doctoral program in the Schools of Business and Technology, Education, Human Services, and Psychology complete the residency colloquia requirement at designated stages in the program. For the master’s degree learner in certain specializations within the School of Human Services, or the School of Psychology, residencies are a required and integral aspect of the clinical training experience. The post-master’s certificates and the EdS programs also include residency requirements.
