Notable Faculty

Nearly all of Capella's faculty from the Harold Abel School of Social and Behavioral Sciences have a doctoral degree and many work as licensed practitioners, school psychologists, school counselors, marriage and family therapists, professional counselors, alcohol and drug abuse counselors, registered play therapy supervisors, psychologists and social workers. Our instructors have expertise in child and adolescent development, and family and geriatric issues. They are also proficient in designing programs to meet state and national accreditation standards, and have experience consulting with privately held businesses with a focus on succession planning, organizational development, executive development, and coaching.

Curtis R. Brant, PhD

Dean

Curtis Brant serves as dean for Capella University's School of Psychology. Dr. Brant has worked at the university since 2005 and has served in a variety of roles including core faculty, research and colloquia chair, and assistant dean. His areas of expertise lie in research, program development, and assessment. Dr. Brant brings more than 15 years of experience teaching, presenting, and conducting research and has authored more than 30 scientific publications/presentations. His research has been featured on National Public Radio, PBS television, The Cleveland Plain Dealer, and APA Monitor. Other professional activities have included consulting in the areas of strategic planning, market analysis, and decision making. Dr. Brant holds a PhD and an MA in Social Psychology from Bowling Green State University and a BA in Psychology from Kent State University.

Elizabeth Harper, PhD

Faculty Chair

Dr. Elizabeth Harper is faculty chair for the Addiction Psychology specialization in the Harold Abel School of Social and Behavioral Sciences. She has been a Capella University faculty member since 2003, serving in such positions as adjunct faculty and subject matter expert in the former Harold Abel School of Psychology, and later as core faculty and lead faculty in the Harold Abel School of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Dr. Harper previously served as faculty at Walden University. Her professional experience includes more than 10 years in clinical, educational, and research settings, working with adults across the lifespan, from developmentally disabled and dually diagnosed young adults to oncology and geriatric populations. Dr. Harper holds a PhD and an MA in Experimental Psychology with an emphasis in Clinical/Health Psychology, both from Southern Methodist University, and a BA in Psychology from Chapman University.
