Notable Faculty

Nearly all of Capella's faculty from the Harold Abel School of Social and Behavioral Sciences have a doctoral degree and many work as licensed practitioners, school psychologists, school counselors, marriage and family therapists, professional counselors, alcohol and drug abuse counselors, registered play therapy supervisors, psychologists and social workers. Our instructors have expertise in child and adolescent development, and family and geriatric issues. They are also proficient in designing programs to meet state and national accreditation standards, and have experience consulting with privately held businesses with a focus on succession planning, organizational development, executive development, and coaching.

Anna Hultquist, PhD

Dean

Anna Hultquist has served as dean for the counseling programs in the Harold Abel School of Social and Behavioral Sciences since 2008. Dr. Hultquist has more than 20 years of experience as a licensed therapist, counselor educator, and program director, designing programs to meet state and national accreditation standards. In addition to maintaining an active private practice, Dr. Hultquist has established and served as clinical director for two community-based counseling centers that trained graduate-level clinical interns. Her service to the profession has included professional licensure initiatives, appointment to the Oregon State Board for Professional Counselors and Therapists, and numerous conference presentations and professional articles. Dr. Hultquist earned a COAMFTE-accredited MS in Human Development, Counseling and Family Studies from the University of Rhode Island; completed graduate work in guidance and school counseling at Rhode Island College; and earned a PhD in Adult Education from the University of Connecticut. Dr. Hultquist holds the distinction of Certified Family Life Educator from the National Council on Family Relations, as well as Clinical Member and Approved Supervisor from the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. She is also a member of the American Counseling Association, the Association for Conflict Resolution, and the International Association of Coaches.

Lucinda West

Faculty Chair

Lucinda West serves as faculty chair for the General Marriage and Family Counseling/Therapy specialization within Capella University's Harold Abel School of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Dr. West has more than 20 years of experience providing marriage, family, and couples therapy; mental health counseling; and multi-family group counseling in various settings, including inpatient, partial hospitalization, and outpatient medical facilities; private agencies; university counseling centers; and in private practice. She has served as director of a counseling center at a mid-size university and as director of a private counseling agency, managing and supervising marriage and family therapy and mental health counseling interns working toward state licensure. Dr. West holds a PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision from Regent University and an MA in Marriage and Family Therapy from East Tennessee State University. In addition, she is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, and a qualified marriage and family therapy and mental health counseling supervisor in the state of Florida. Dr. West is a professional member of the American Counseling Association (ACA) and the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT), for which she is also an approved supervisor.
