“As time went on, I realized that there were more and more IT professionals just like me who had four years of college. That's when I started to get more serious about getting a master's degree.”

As an IT professional with one of the world's best-known diversified technology companies, Linda Dawson had long believed that there was no compelling reason to pursue an advanced degree. But tight economic times—and higher workplace expectations—changed her mind.

“The more I spoke with newly promoted colleagues, the more I heard that master's degrees and professional certifications were an edge in securing interviews or getting the job,” says Dawson, an IT security manager with 3M Corp. in Minnesota. “Going back to school seemed like a good decision.”

In addition, the economic turbulence of the times made Dawson very aware of the need to differentiate herself within her company. An advanced degree, and the greater aptitude and leadership skills that go with it, would make her a more valuable and versatile employee, Dawson reasoned.

While the decision was sound, her educational journey offered challenges. As an IT professional focused on data loss prevention, Dawson often found herself working on extended assignments around the world, including Brazil, Mexico, Asia, and the United Kingdom. She needed an educational solution that would work for her—no matter what time zone she found herself in.

From the beginning, Dawson had no doubts about the effectiveness and academic quality online education could deliver. But she was not as confident that a virtual courseroom environment would provide rich, fulfilling discussions. That issue was quickly put to rest when she realized that all Capella learners submit responses to assigned questions, with no one “sitting out the discussion.” She took part in robust conversation on key topics, where she could both share and gain unique insights in a community of IT professionals.

“I was amazed at the information I gleaned in those discussions from learners in the same profession—but working in industries different from mine,” Dawson says. “I discovered there were a number of similar challenges that we all faced, and we could talk about solutions.”

“One thing that really stood out in choosing Capella was that many of the faculty are from well-known and respected universities around the country,” says Dawson. “So, when I was able to point out that my company specifically goes to many of these universities to recruit future employees, that point went a long way in helping me demonstrate the quality of learning at Capella.”

Dawson continues to expand her credentials through specialized training and certifications in her field. “My Capella education was a very positive experience, and when I talk with people who are struggling with the decision of continuing their education, I often take the opportunity to recommend Capella.”
