Colloquia Presentations (iGuide login required)
The colloquia or residency experience is one of the ways Capella prepares and educates doctoral learners about the protection of human research participants. With each colloquia experience, learners receive information about the IRB at Capella, beginning with the historical context for ethics in research and ending with very specific information about Capella's IRB application and review process. During the final weekend experience, learners attend sessions specific to the IRB at Capella. A member from the Capella Institutional Review Board is available at each colloquia to help identify ethical issues in proposed research and to think about ways to mitigate risk or conflicts of interest. Look for them in Track 3 sessions or between sessions.
The following presentations are offered during Colloquia Tracks 1, 2, and 3. Please revisit these presentations as you develop your dissertation proposal.
Dissertation Preparation Presentations
Choosing a Dissertation Topic (Track 1)
In this presentation, you will learn answers to the following questions:
What is a good dissertation topic? Research problem? Research Question?
You will also learn the fundamental steps in determining a topic for your dissertation.
Preparing for Scientific Merit Review (Track 3)
The purpose of this presentation is to prepare doctoral researchers for scientific merit review.
Ethical Preparation Presentations
Key Events in Ethical Research (Track 1)
Learn about key events in history that have developed the ethical standards of today's research activities.
Plagiarism (Track 1)
Do you know what to do if you see it? How would you handle a situation if your peer plagiarized a work? Try these case studies and learn more about Capella's Learner Code of Conduct and Academic Honesty Policy regarding plagiarism.
Ethical Issues in Courseroom Research (Track 1)
What would you do if you were concerned that a fellow learner crossed the line between a course assignment and research? In this module you can evaluate your action(s) and receive feedback. In addition, you will learn the difference between a courseroom assignment and human subjects research that is regulated by Capella's IRB.
Protecting Human Participants in Research (Track 2)
Learn about what is appropriate in requesting and obtaining permission letters from research sites and what an appropriate informed consent form may look like. This module has school-specific examples!
IRB Process Map: A General Overview (Track 2)
What does the IRB review process look like? In this presentation you will learn how your IRB application travels from your hands to the hands of the IRB reviewer. You will also have the opportunity to test your knowledge about this process by taking a short quiz.
IRB Application Guidance (Track 3)
Use this interactive tool to navigate sections of the IRB application. You will receive helpful guidance in completing the application and a chance to test your ability to complete the form!
IRB Application Process (Track 3)
Have you wondered what you need to know about the IRB application process at Capella? Completing the IRB application process can seem like a daunting task to most researchers. However, there are many things you can do to prepare yourself as a researcher prior to the IRB review.
