Ari Ferrand had always dreamed of becoming a news reporter in her hometown of New Orleans.

But, as fate (and determination) would have it, she went from imagining herself in front of the camera to pursuing her MBA in Human Resource Management at Capella University and immersing herself in the family business.

An Unlikely Career Change

Ferrand chose to stay in Louisiana for her bachelor’s degree, completing her program in broadcast journalism in 2013. She promptly began sending out resumes to land her first gig at a news station. But she never landed a job.

Feeling rejected, but not yet discouraged, Ferrand turned to her family’s business while she figured out her next move. “I started working for my family’s trucking company as I considered other career options,” she explains. “They needed my help as the company reorganized. I was determined to continue to pursue my passions, but it turns out working for the business helped me figure those out.”

Seeing the need her family business had during this period of reorganization prompted Ferrand to pursue an MBA in HR management. “I saw an opportunity to gain business knowledge and expand my HR capabilities. I wanted to help the company thrive, and much of what I saw that needed changing and support was in areas of HR and employee development,” Ferrand says.

Defining Moments

Ferrand considers her decision to pursue an advanced degree at Capella, along with the additional responsibilities given to her at work, to be two defining moments in her career.

“The ability to grow as a business professional was very motivating for me,” she notes. “I was also looking for a program that provided flexibility. Capella’s program—although quite rigorous—did just that. It gave me the flexibility to handle my work obligations at the same time.”

She credits Capella’s program as giving her a deeper understanding of HR management. “It increased my interest in the field of business,” she explains. “As a result, I’ve transformed into a more innovative business leader and my networking skills have significantly improved.”

Finding Her Passion and Inspiring Others

Ferrand believes that the courses she completed at Capella helped her discover a true passion for human resource management. “I developed solid foundational skills, became a member of Delta Mu Delta Business Honor Society, and finished my program with a 4.0!” she says proudly.

“All the business principles and concepts I learned in my coursework have been applicable to my work. I am more outgoing, more comfortable speaking at public engagements, and I now have the experience needed to help with future business developments as an HR manager.”

She hopes to motivate other aspiring young businesswomen as they move through their careers. “Pursuing an MBA was a stepping stone on my journey to success as a business leader,” she explains. “I plan to take all the business skills I’ve learned with me in my future career steps and to motivate others along the way.”

As for what’s next, Ferrand plans to obtain her human resource certification through the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM). “I am excited to pursue life in a new way that is more fulfilling, satisfying, and rewarding now that I will have more time to explore personal interests and focus on improving my career goals,” she says. “I feel fully prepared for the challenges that await me.”
