In early December 2015, Capella University announced the recipients of its Capella Business Leader Award, an annual award sponsored by The Wall Street Journal and bestowed on students enrolled in the university’s online business programs who demonstrate academic excellence and a comprehensive understanding of today’s business environment*.

The three winners are:

  • Jennifer Meyer, MBA in Health Care Management.
  • Batina Smith, BS in Business with a Human Resource Management specialization.
  • Dana Stewart, PhD in Business with a Finance specialization.

The winners visited New York City, where they took an insider’s tour of The Wall Street Journal, met with Dow Jones Talent Development leaders, and rang the closing bell at NASDAQ. They also participated in a career development session on the power of negotiation

While the attendees enjoyed all the events, the last item was a special highlight. “The closing bell ceremony at NASDAQ was an amazing moment,” says Meyer. “It was a well-coordinated experience with great visibility and energy. It was the perfect event to recognize individuals for business leadership. Very few people have this opportunity in their lifetime, and I’m so grateful for getting to stand on the podium with Capella and The Wall Street Journal leaders. ”

The winners found the trip—and the award—to be invaluable. “I have broadened my professional network and made new friends with a passion and goals similar to my own,” says Smith. “I have a new level of confidence in my abilities as both a HR professional and a business leader. I realize I have unlimited potential. My experience has been an on-going adventure teaching me that things I thought were not possible are possible, and perseverance is essential!”

Stewart adds, “My entire educational experience at Capella has been extraordinary from the start. Winning this award increases my desire not only to succeed, but also to help others succeed in future endeavors.”

Capella’s collaboration with The Wall Street Journal began in early 2015 with the common goals of expanding students’ knowledge of business, strategy, leadership, finance, and economics.
