Clinical Psychology Specialization Doctor of Psychology

Harold Abel School of Psychology

Fieldwork Requirements

Your PsyD program requires a minimum of 1,000 practicum hours and 2,000 internship hours. These fieldwork components will give you hands-on, in-person educational experiences to solidify your knowledge. Under the guidance of professionals in the field as well as faculty supervisors, you will apply skills gained through your online learning and residency.

The Practicum Experience

Practicum is a part-time, on-site commitment that takes place over nine months to one calendar year and includes enrollment in the accompanying practicum courses. You will receive supervised training and practice the core competencies of professional psychology while simultaneously completing the accompanying online courses.

The Internship Experience

Your PsyD program requires a supervised pre-doctoral internship experience that typically occurs in the final year of your program. The internship requires a full-time, on-site commitment with a minimum of 2,000 hours, completed sequentially over a one-year period, or part-time site placement with a minimum of 2,000 hours, at least 20 hours per week, not to exceed eight sequential quarters.

Fieldwork Settings

You will work with Capella faculty to identify a practicum and internship site within your community. Fieldwork sites and supervisors must be approved by Capella to ensure all program requirements and accreditation standards are met.

Fieldwork settings may include, but are not limited to:

  • Social service organizations (e.g., alcohol and drug treatment facilities, community mental health centers, foster care agencies)
  • Schools
  • Private practice settings of an approved supervisor
  • Hospitals
  • Nursing homes
  • Non-profit agencies (e.g., homeless shelters, literacy programs, rape and abuse crisis centers)
