Capella Results – John Luukkonen

Best part of my job, well, there really is a different job everyday; no two days are ever the same.

I started as a teacher and I think a good administrator really is a good teacher and deep in my heart I think, I am a teacher; I will always be a teacher. Well, the job I had before the PhD, I was a school director. It was a mid-level administrative job. It was a good job. I started my Capella education while I got that job. As I was studying for my degree, I received raises as I moved up.

When I got my degree, I was offered a Dean’s position which offered me about 35-40% more money. With my doctoral degree, I went to work for another college, TCI, and that again kicked up more money. So my doctoral degree, financially speaking, it is been quite rewarding for me. I mean professionally, it has been rewarding too, but I mean there have been financial rewards that have gone along with it step-by-step.

Education has become quite costly and it is true. A doctoral degree is quite a bit of money, but I found that there is a direct positive correlation with the more education that I received after getting my Capella degree and the increase in my salary. So, I think you will see a return on your investment.

My job is more fun and I am able to do things as a Dean that I could not do in my other positions because quite frankly, I have more power. I have more of a say in decision making. Where a lot of satisfaction comes in and said, I can decide to do things, come up with ideas, pursue ideas, be creative in ways that I could not if I were not in a position that I have right now and I would not have the position that I have right now I believe if I did not have my doctorate.
