Synthia Smith:
It was a huge accomplishment just to complete the degree. It gave me the foundation and the courage to start my own non-profit organization and everything that I have learned at Capella has definitely prepared me and given me the courage to start this non-profit.
It is called Sisters of Nia, Incorporated. It is a non-profit for adolescent and girls living in urban communities. And our focus is on building self-esteem, academic achievement, community service, support, and entrepreneurial skills, and also, focusing on building the communications between mothers and their adolescent daughters.
I taught school for 15 years before I decided to begin this Master’s journey.

Synthia Smith:
And when I decided I was going to resign from teaching, people thought I was crazy. What are you going to do? What are you going to do? And what are you going to do with your Master’s degree? I fee like, this Master’s program led into Sisters of Nia and definitely led me to living my life with the purpose.
