General Colin L. Powell, USA (Ret.)

Thank you, learners, for that warm welcome.

It’s a great pleasure to be with you this evening.  And this is such a fascinating audience.  I’ve been reading up on Capella and learned all of the demographics associated with all of you and the dedication that you have to learning, the commitment you have to further your education and to move up in the world and prepare yourself for a new opportunity that will come along.  What you learners are doing are getting real time education in the most powerful way with the most powerful tools and with a great faculty that watches you go through all of this.  This is the future of education.

And as the literature about Capella states so clearly, this is more important than any other time in our nation’s history. Not enough people are getting the advanced degrees that we need, not enough people are getting into colleges and universities, and perhaps the most critical area of education in our country is not enough kids are graduating from high school.  And so it’s the entire chain of education that we have to work on and you are at the top of that chain and I congratulate you for making that extra effort.  Even though you’re working, even though you have families, even though you have other diversions in your life, you have made a commitment to get your PhD degrees and I congratulate you for that.
