The Capella MS in School Counseling is an online school counseling degree program designed to cover theories of counseling with children and adolescents, group counseling, counseling for college and career readiness, and child and adolescent psychopathology. Program specializations provide focus for your career path.
This program emphasizes both the fundamental knowledge you need to succeed in school counseling and the practical skills you need to put that knowledge to work. It provides the opportunity to develop a professional, specialized skill set that can help prepare you to make an impact on today’s youth.
In the MS in School Counseling program, your core courses help build a foundation of knowledge and strengthen your skills in key areas of school counseling. From there, you’ll move into the coursework for your chosen specialization to grow your expertise and advance toward your final project.

The Addiction Treatment and Recovery specialization is designed for graduate program counseling learners who want to increase their knowledge of substance abuse, addiction and compulsive behaviors. Learners will expand their knowledge of addiction theory and treatment and intervention for individuals and groups. The curriculum also emphasizes developmental and multicultural considerations and ethical and legal issues associated with providing treatment/interventions for diverse populations.
Specialization outcomes
The Child and Adolescent Counseling specialization is designed for graduate program counseling learners who want to expand their knowledge, theory and best practices needed to support the social emotional growth and development of children and adolescents.
Learners will gain more extensive knowledge of developmentally appropriate interventions related to play therapy, family therapy and treatment and intervention planning for typical childhood and adolescent disorders. The curriculum also emphasizes developmental and multicultural considerations and ethical and legal issues associated with providing therapy for diverse child and adolescent populations.
Learners complete two foundational play therapy classes and choose two out of three other courses specific to work with child and adolescent populations.
Specialization outcomes
The General School Counseling specialization is designed for graduate program counseling learners who want to take advantage of maximum flexibility in choosing their additive course content. Learners can select any four courses within the MS Counseling programs, to include PLAY-prefixed programs* to create their General specialization within the 90-credit MS in School Counseling Program.

Our curriculum incorporates the values, principles and ethical standards of national, regional and state professional counseling associations and honor societies, including the American School Counseling Association.
Capella University’s MS in School Counseling program is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) through March 31, 2028. Capella University’s Educator Preparation Provider (EPP) unit is accredited based on the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) Standards through 2024.
