Marketing connects a company to the outside world – it’s how organizations understand and connect with audiences across channels and drive business growth. That takes strategic and creative thinking: building a digital strategy, improving the customer experience and turning attention into leads and conversions.

Marketing is often broken down into the Four Ps: product, price, place and promotion. Newer approaches like the Four Cs (consumer, cost, convenience and communication) and Seven Ps (the original Four Ps plus people, process and physical evidence) build on that same foundation.

What you’ll learn in a marketing degree program

At Capella, students who choose a bachelor’s in business, marketing build core business knowledge alongside marketing-specific expertise. You can focus on the fundamentals of sales and marketing, or tailor your coursework toward a specialty like international marketing or public relations.

A marketing degree is built around a set of skills that carry across industries and roles.

  • Strategic thinking: setting a direction for how a brand reaches and keeps its audience
  • Creative problem-solving: developing campaigns and messaging that cut through the noise
  • Data and market analysis: using research and analytics to understand what consumers want and whether a strategy is working
  • Communication: writing, presenting and adapting a message for different audiences and channels
  • Project and change management: coordinating people and moving initiatives from idea to execution

  • Advertising: creating campaigns across print, audio and digital formats to promote products and services
  • Media: connecting companies with outlets across radio, television, web and print
