Counseling is all about face-to-face interaction. Can an online degree provide that all-important interpersonal communication training?
Yes, it can.
Capella University combines theory and hands-on training in counseling and therapy master’s degree programs to provide real-world field experience along with the flexibility of online learning.
Capella’s counseling and therapy programs teach theory, research, assessment and field-specific knowledge. Master’s candidates use online courserooms to interact with faculty and peers throughout their courses. Courses require live and recorded role plays, which let students demonstrate counseling and therapy skills for analysis and review.
Capella’s counseling faculty are active professionals in their fields, bringing real-world experience into the learning environment. Every student receives weekly individual feedback, and faculty, academic advisors and staff are committed to supporting each student’s professional development and successful program completion.
Capella’s master’s in counseling and therapy programs incorporate hands-on training and extensive interaction between faculty and students. Each student completes two residency courses. Each 10-week course includes six weeks of online learning and a five-and-a-half-day, face-to-face residency, where students learn counseling skills from faculty and practice them in small groups.
Students enter site-based learning after successful completion of all courses, including the residencies. Site-based learning provides the opportunity to intern as counselors-in-training in agencies, schools and clinics in their communities. This training is done under the direct supervision of a licensed professional.
Students who complete the master’s in counseling or therapy program requirements accrue a minimum of 100 hours of supervised counseling experience in a practicum and 600 hours of fieldwork at sites in their communities. Students should confirm their own state’s site-based learning requirements for licensure before enrolling.
Before enrolling in master’s in counseling and therapy programs, students should confirm their licensing path with their own state board.
