*All credit for prior learning and transfer credit must be completed prior to starting any program in the FlexPath format. Any professional certification or external courses taken concurrently with FlexPath enrollment cannot be recognized in the Capella degree program.
Each course must be completed within 12 weeks: within that time frame, it’s up to you. With FlexPath, you can complete coursework on your schedule and move on without having to wait.
You can take one or two courses at a time. When you finish a course, you can start the next one without having to wait. There is no limit to how many total courses you complete during each billing session.
All coursework is evaluated through competency-based assessments. Each assessment is broken down into competencies, or criteria, that are all assessed with one of four performance levels: distinguished, proficient, basic or non-performance. These performance levels are what appear on your official transcript for each competency within the course. If you’re struggling with an assessment, coaching and other resources are available to help you.
When you finish a course, you will automatically be registered for the next course in your program plan. If you wish to register for a course earlier, or if a new course isn’t open after 4–6 hours of finishing the prior course, contact a coach for help with registration.
With FlexPath you set your deadlines within the first 12 days of each course. While these deadlines can be adjusted at any time after you set them, you’ll be required to engage in a course activity at least once every 28 days and finish each course within 12 weeks.
If you are approved for federal financial aid, note the requirements for you to maintain your eligibility. You must:
- Participate in a unique course during each 12-week billing session
- Complete a minimum number of required program points by the end of each billing session based on your degree and enrollment levels
- Maintain good academic standing
What Capella students say about FlexPath
“I completed my BSN online in 2020 through Capella University, an education partner of [my employer]. I chose the FlexPath option since it worked well with my work schedule and allowed me the flexibility to complete classes at my own pace. The topics covered were all applicable to real-life scenarios that I encounter in my current position as a nurse manager. Whenever I talk to staff who are interested in pursuing their BSN, I always recommend Capella’s FlexPath learning format.”
Marissa Miller
BSN, FlexPath
“I chose FlexPath for both my bachelor’s and master’s degree at Capella. My experience was very positive, and the curriculum was relevant to my career and provided new opportunities to learn and grow.”
Angela Wiley
BS Business and MBA, FlexPath
“I began as a GuidedPath student, but I switched to FlexPath halfway through my bachelor’s degree. I enjoyed both avenues for different reasons. GuidedPath gave me the ability to take classes in a more traditional setting which really helped me settle back into school after being out for so long. In contrast, FlexPath provided me the opportunity to work at my own pace which allowed me to really blossom in my studies.”
Elizabeth Garner
BS Business and MBA, FlexPath
“I chose FlexPath, and without this structure/format, I without a doubt wouldn’t have made it. I wouldn’t have been able to start or complete my degree. FlexPath made it all possible!”
Kenny Taylor
MS Human Resource Management, FlexPath
