How to become a software developer can look very different depending on your starting point: a degree in computer science or information technology, an intensive coding bootcamp or self-directed study built around real project work. What changes is the timeline and how you structure your learning path.

A software developer designs, builds and tests the programs and applications that businesses and consumers use. They write code in programming languages like Python, Java or JavaScript, fix errors when things break and update existing software to keep it working.
Projects usually begin with a specific need, like a team wanting a new feature or a system running too slowly. The developer figures out what has to change, writes the code and tests it against the rest of the system.
Software teams rarely work alone. Product managers decide what to build, designers shape how it looks and other engineers handle connected parts of the system. Meetings, code reviews and documentation are all part of the routine.
A developer’s role can vary a lot by workplace. At a startup, they may take a feature from idea to launch. In a large enterprise, they’re more likely to work on one part of a much bigger system with a wider team. Consultants usually move between clients, building, improving or fixing systems for specific projects.
Job listings often use software developer, software engineer and web developer interchangeably, though each title points to a different focus.

The overlap is strongest at smaller companies, where one person may handle all three.
At larger companies, the roles are usually more clearly divided: engineers may focus on system design, web developers on websites and software developers on product features.

While the exact path looks different for everyone, most people follow a similar general sequence to go from just starting out to being job-ready. Each step prepares you for the next, so taking them in order helps you avoid gaps later.
There are three common learning paths into the field, and each suits a different schedule and learning style.
A bachelor’s degree in computer science or information technology is the most structured route and covers programming, algorithms, databases and software systems. Evening or weekend formats can make it easier to study while working.
A coding bootcamp offers a faster, more intensive route, with full-time and part-time options depending on how much time you can commit each week.
Self-directed study gives you the most flexibility, but there’s no set curriculum or instructor keeping you on track. You’ll need to build your own learning sequence, source your own materials and stay accountable to a schedule you set yourself, all without the built-in deadlines or feedback a degree or bootcamp provides. Note that this track does not come with an academic award or diploma.

Start with one language. Python is widely considered the strongest starting point for beginners because its syntax reads close to English and it’s used across data, back-end and scripting work. JavaScript is the better choice if you’re drawn to web development, since it runs both in the browser and on servers.
Once the first language feels comfortable, the next layer is the fundamentals that apply regardless of specialization. This includes data structures like arrays (ordered collections of items), lists (flexible sequences you can modify) and hash maps (key-value pairs for fast lookups), as well as algorithms like sorting (arranging data in order) and searching (finding specific items in a dataset).
Version control tools like Git track changes to code and let developers work on the same project without overwriting each other. The basics of how software gets designed, tested and deployed matter too. This is the foundation every specialization builds on, and it’s what helps you decide which area of software development to focus on next.
Front-end developers build the user-facing parts of an application in the browser, while back-end developers manage the servers, databases and logic behind the scenes. Full-stack developers bridge both worlds.
Meanwhile, mobile developers build specifically for iOS and Android, and cloud and DevOps engineers focus on system infrastructure. AI-integrated development is also becoming a distinct path.
Your choice of specialization guides what comes next. Front-end developers may go deeper into React or Vue, while back-end developers often work with Node, Django or Spring. Cloud roles rely heavily on platforms such as AWS and Azure. The aim is to build real depth in one area rather than collect a little knowledge across all of them.

GitHub is a platform where developers store and share their code, and it’s typically where employers expect to see your work – but a good GitHub portfolio doesn’t need to be crowded. A good way to do this is to build them in stages. Start with a simple site to show the basics, then add a project with more moving parts, such as a task manager or an app connected to an external API (a way for one piece of software to request and share data with another). Finish with something close to the work you want to be hired for.
By the end, your portfolio should show range, stronger technical choices and the ability to carry a project from idea to working product. Building those projects is often how you begin building practical, real-world skills.
Hands-on experience can start well before your first full-time role. Internships show you how engineering teams plan, build, review and ship work, while open-source contributions prove you can understand and improve someone else’s code. Additionally, freelance projects add client experience and personal projects give you concrete work to discuss in interviews.

When you apply, targeting junior roles or internships can help you build initial experience. Tailor your resume to the job and lead with the projects most relevant to the work.

Principal systems engineer and senior software roles combine deep technical knowledge with responsibility for how software is designed at scale.
