How to create an inclusive nursing culture

February 23, 2015

In the field of nursing, much discussion is taking place around the topic of diversity and how to create a more inclusive health care culture.

Providing nurses with an inclusive work environment gives them a more positive work experience, which in turn helps them perform at a higher level.

Diversity is also a critical factor in patient care. Being able to communicate with and care for a widely diverse patient population, many of whom arrive at their place of medical care with cultural differences that will affect how they respond to a clinician’s recommendation, is increasingly important. Positive outcomes are the primary goal, but they’re harder to attain if there is a cultural barrier or perceived lack of sensitivity on the part of the medical staff. Understanding the different needs—and potential medical risks that vary by community—allows nurses to deliver high-quality care.

MinorityNurse.com recently published a two-part exploration of diversity and inclusion in the workplace.Your Role in an Inclusive Work Environment outlines the five steps to take to begin talking about inclusion. Once your team has begun the conversation, Changing the Culture addresses the additional steps a team can take to make change. The posts were inspired by the work of G. Rumay Alexander, EdD, RN, FAAN, who has spent over 20 years in public policy, advocacy, and health careers development, with an emphasis on cultural diversity issues.
